The Beat Machine

The Beat Machines are a family of bespoke percussion synthesisers and sequencers designed and built by Andrew R. Brown and John Ferguson using DIY electronics. They employ low-cost microcontrollers and feature user interfaces with circular designs representing rhythmic cycles.

The beat machine has evolved throughout it’s development. The first Beat Machine was a 3-voice instrument built on a square PCB-based design using two Arduino Nano microcontrollers and the Mozzi audio library.
The Beat Machine S3 series is an 8-voice instrument that features an ESP32-S3 microcontroller using the M16 audio library. It has two variants: a circular PCB design and a larger version housed in a custom laser-cut wooden enclosure.
